Start video at 4:30. Hannan makes 2 very interesting points. His first is a distinction in how one frames statistics. Detractors of the American system say that people have lower life expectancy etc. He advocates a diferent look at the numbers. He states that it is more important to look at one’s life expectancy for example, AFTER one is diagnosed with a particular disease. (For those of you who say “precisely, we have a system that only fixes you when you are sick and doesn’t pay to keep you well!”…relax, I know. My larger point is to show how subtle the use of statistics can be and to encourage people to question ALL statisitcs, break them down and investigate how, to what end and by whom they are being used. There may be more there than meets the eye.
His other point is that if you truly believe your way (in his case a conservative viewpoint) is better, you must pursuade people to that vision with a sense of warmth and a true sense of immediate betterment.
